词汇衔接在小说语篇中的连贯功能

The Coherent Function of Lexical Chains in Discourse

词汇衔接是衔接的一种主要方式 ,但是只有在统一的语境中 ,词汇衔接才能实现语篇的连贯。衔接中的词汇在长语篇中经常形成词汇链 ,不同的词汇链在语篇中的纽带作用不尽相同。本文试图通过分析词汇衔接的四种手段在艾伦·坡著名的短篇小说《红色死魔的假面舞会》中的使用 ,说明词汇衔接及其形成的词汇链对构成和渲染小说中的恐怖气氛的重要作用。此外 ,词汇衔接和词汇链也保证了小说语境的统一 ,从而达到语篇连贯。

Lexical cohesion is one of the major cohesive devices. Only in proper context, can lexical cohesion achieve coherence in discourse. Lexical items often connect to form lexical chains in discourse, especially in long discourse; the cohesive strength of lexical chains in discourse is different from one another. In analyzing the four devices of lexical cohesion that fabricate the literary effect of the short story, The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allan Poe, we try to indicate the importance of lexical cohesion and the consequent lexical chains in building up the horrible atmosphere of the novel. Meanwhile, the lexical chain enables the unification of the context of the novel, and achieves the coherence of the discourse thereby.
