沈从文与水上勉同为中日“乡土文学”中富有代表性的作家,两人在进行乡村文明与城市文明的对比中,展现了因现代工业文明的入侵而带来的对乡村文明的毁灭性后果,面对即将逝去的传统文明表现出无限的眷恋和深刻的焦虑不安,作品中均具有一种悲剧的情蕴和凄美的美学风格。乡土文明是民族传统文化之“根”,把这两位极富代表性的乡土文学作家进行平行比较,不仅凸显两国乡土文学的根本特征,而且还折射出各自民族传统文化的本质特点。

Shen Cong-wen and Mizukami Thutomu are the representative authors of 'local literature' in China and Japan. In their works they contrast the country culture with the urban culture, revealing the miserable consequence of the extinct countryside culture caused by the modem industry civilization. With a tragic tone and a sadly beautiful aesthetic style, their works mirror their indefinite attachment to and deep worry about the traditional culture which is dying away. A parallel comparison between the two representative authors of 'local literature can not only show the basic features of the local literature in the two countries, but reflect the essential characters of their traditional cultures.
