The grammatical problem of an interrogative pronoun (+ N) being a subject or subject complement in 'an interrogative pronoun (+N) + be + NP' has remained unsolved to this day,the reason of which is that English has a distinctive convention of putting an interrogative pronoun( + N ) at the beginning of an interrogative sentence whether it is used as a subject or a subject complement, which invalidates the grammatical rules distinguishing a subject from a subject complement. In this case, an interrogative pronoun (+N) being a subject or subject complement cannot be determined by the rules of English grammar,i.e. the grammatical problem of an interrogative pronoun (+N) being a subject or subject complement in 'an interrogative pronoun (+N) + be + NP' cannot be solved in the category of English grammar. It is only through logic reasoning and semantic analysis that we may solve this problem: An interrogative pronoun (+N) is the subject complement in 'an interrogative pronoun (+N) + be + NP'.
