历来对江春霖的评价均留下一个封建传统的包公式的“铁面御史”形象。本文通过考查江春霖在新政、立宪改革中的一些言行、立场观点 ,体现他开明的政治观念 ,一定的资本主义倾向。给予新的评价 :认为他还应是一位近代史上封建官僚中体制革新的改革派。他反对皇族集权 ,语侵朝廷获罪 ,不只是因为得罪权贵。本文也试图通过江春霖对监察御史职责执着的追求 ,以及遭朝廷放逐后社会各界对他的声援支持 ,展示一代名御史以天下为己任的高尚情怀和近代言官的地位、影响。
