A Textual Analysis of the Evolution of Hejian Kingdom and Duke Mao's Birthplace

西汉河间国的沿革与毛公的籍贯问题密切相关,河间设置前是赵国属地,毛公出生时河间仍属赵,因此,"毛公赵人说"和"河间人说"并行不悖。毛公传经涉及范围较广,虽然河间、献县、饶阳三地均有毛公传经的遗迹,但传说和明清县志不足为凭,在目前没有确凿证据的情况下,仍应以采用毛公"赵人说"或"河间说"为宜。

The evolution of Hejian County is closely related to the issue of where Duke Mao was born because it was part of the territory of the Zhao Kingdom. Therefore, it is correct to say that Duke Mao was 'a citizen of the Zhao Kingdom' and 'a resident of Hejian County'. Duke Mao traveled far and wide teaching The Book of Songs, but even if smatterings of traces indicating that Duke Mao once traveled to Hejian, Xianxian and Raoyang can be found we still do not have strong evidence to support the view that Duke Mao was born in these places simply because legends and records are not so credible. Thus, we still support the view that Duke Mao was born in Hejian or the Zhao Kingdom.
