Noel Dutrait is widely acclaimed in the West as an outstanding sinologist and translator who has translated many works of literature by contemporary Chinese writers, such as The Kingdom of Wine, Plump Breasts and Big Bottom by Mo Yan, The Chess King, The King of Trees and The King of Children by A Cheng, and Grain by Su Tong. He was awarded 'The Best Translation Prize' for his translation of Mo Yan's The Kingdom of Wine in 2000, and 'The Knight Medal of France' for his great contribution to literature. He interviewed Mo Yan several times to discuss issues concerning contemporary Chinese literature. Mo Yan's analysis and critique of contemporary Chinese literature is insightful, revealing and unique, and his analysis of his own literary style is even more outstanding. We have published part of the dialog between Mo Yan and Noel Dutrait in hopes that is will draw more attention to and arouse more discussion of issues concerning contemporary Chinese literature.
