Chaotic order: The unity of The Waste Land

诗人艾略特的长诗《荒原》的出版给西方诗坛以巨大冲击和震憾。诗中出现的大量摘引及对神话、传说的借用 ,使《荒原》看起来像一部杂乱拼凑之作。长诗虽表面混乱无序 ,实则在深层意义上达到了象征与主题的统一。表面的混乱与无序是为了与体现现代社会的混乱与无序 ,以达到主题和形式统一的目的。

As one of the representative works of modernism, The Waste Land brought great impact to Western poetry. Its abundance in literal allusions and images earned the poem the 'fame' of 'chaotic poem'. Underneath chaos and disorder, the poem has achieved a unity of imagery and theme. The superficial disorder is intended to be in accordance with the age of chaos, so as to maintain a unity of content and form.
