清代学者刘宝楠以为《论语》“子所雅言”章的“雅言”一词指古代共通语,此说在现代几乎已成为定论。该文考察了历史上有关《沦语》此章的符种解释,否定了“雅言”为共通语的成说。

The Scholar Liu Baonan of the Qing Dynasty started the theory, now universally accepted, that 'Confucius'Ya Yan ,' a chapter in Analects, was the common speech of the time. The present article gives a survey on the past studies of the chapter and leads to a conclusion that contradicts the accepted theory.
