Dimmsdale,a leading character in Hawthornes THE SCARLET LETTER,was a person whose inner world was rich but complex.He looked decent but sham actually.He had the lofty ideal but sought ease and comfort.He intended to be honest but did not make up his mind to practice.His religious belief was in conflict with his reality.Hence his mind and body were constantly tortured by these conflicts,which led to his death at last.The value of this novel lies in the good analysis and description of the psychological characteristics of Dimmsdale and so forth.
