Objective To observe the changes of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) in the patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).Methods 30 patients with ALS were analysed with median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (mSEP) and tibial nerve somatosensory evoked patentials (tSEP) and compared with 27 healthy persons. Results mSEP and tSEP were abnomal in 13( 43.3%) of 30 and 7(28%) of 25 tested patients. The mean values of SEP peak latencies and interpeak latencies except peak latencies (N 9, PF and LP) increased in ALS patients compared with controls. Conclusions The results of our study suggest that the damage of sensory pathways exist in ALS. Central abnormalities of SEP were more obvious than peripheral abnormalities. SEP examination had some value in localization of sensory lesion in ALS patients.
