How can people express their ideas appropriately and comprehend the others' accurately? This depends on their awareness of the context in which the communication takes place. By applying Grice's co operative principle, this article emphasizes that in communication the speaker can flout the maxims deliberately and force the hearer to do extensive inference. It is the utterance inference that makes linguistic communication lively and meaningful.
