Xirao Gyatso,an eminent monk from Khoshut tribe of Oirat Mongols in Qinghai province,won hearty respect and affection of both Mongolian and Tibetan monks and laymen for his life—long diligent study and spiritual practice in Labrang Monastery at southern Gansu province,the profundity of his knowledge and his high morals.He trained hundreds of excellent disciples and wrote many Buddhist works with original ideas.Having made exceptional contributions to the inheritance and development of ethnic religions and cultures,he was well known in Tibet and Mongolia and enjoyed good fame in Buddhist cicles.He deserved a place in the history of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and left behind brilliant chapters in the history of cultural exchange in modern times between Tibetan and Mongol.
