Objective To explore the differences between obese and normal-weight children in the contents of seven trace elements, and whether these trace elements influenced growth and development of children. Methods Sixty obese children (30 boys and 30 girls, aged from 11 to 14 years, their weight ≥130% of weight-for-height) were assigned to obese group. Sixty normal-weight children (their weight ranged 90~110% of weight-for-height), matched on the basis of age, sex, class, and socioeconomic state, were chosen as control group. Data on morphological and functional parameters and the contents of these trace elements in hairs were obtained from all subjects. Results Obese girls had higher contents of Al, Cu, V, and Mn in hairs. There was a trend toward decreased hair Cr, Mn, V contents with increasing age. The contents of trace elements were significantly correlated to many morphological parameters. Conclusions Among obese children, there is an overall increasing tendency in the contents of trace elements, and the contents are correlated to many morphological parameters. Al, V, Cr, and I might be risk factors for body fat accumulation. The increased contents of Mn and Cr might be good predictors to central obesity.
