Objective:To observe T helper cells (Th1/Th2) in peripheral blood in the patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis(JRA). Methods: Peripheral blood was obtained from 25 children with JRA. 8 children undergoing small operation were recruited as controls. The ratio of Th1 to Th2cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was evaluated by using intracellular staining analysis of cytokine production by 3-colored flow cytometry. Results: In comparison with normal controls, the patients with JRA had significantly fewer Th2 cells among their PBMC. The percentage of Th1 cells among PBMC was not different between patients and normal controls. Conclusion: Decreased Th2 cells might be a predominant factor in JRA pathogenesis.
