As the representative figures in the intellectual arena in the 19th century's England, Thomas Carlyle and Matthew Arnold, under the great influence of liberalhumanism, combined social and moral criticism with liberalhumanistic cultural idealization and made penetrating critique of English society in the age of industrial capitalism. Nevertheless, the difference between them was also symptomatic of the internal contradiction and split in modern English intellectual discourse as well as liberal-humanism.
