On Westernization Movement and the Modernizations in China

洋务运动是中国近代化运动的开端,其口号“中学为体,西学为用”虽有保守落后的一面,但主要目的是学习西方先进的科学文化技术,而甲午战争的失败又为洋务运动提出了在中国政治体制上进行近代化改革的课题。

Westernization Movement was the beginning of the movement of modernizations in China, with the slogan of ' The Chinese culture is our dominating culture while the western culture is practical for life use.' Although it was, to some extent, conservative and backward, our primary aims were to learn advanced, scientific cultures and technologies from the western world. However, the failure in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 raised for Westernization Movement another subject about the performance of the reforms of modernizations in the political system of China.
