Through the analysis of the development and changes of the Joads' thought and action, the confrontation between the poor and the rich, and the process in which the small Joads is replaced by a large social family made up of by poor people, the paper discloses that the theme of the novel undergoes an expansion from individual to community, and deduces that that expansion is closely related to the writer's philosophical points of view.
