more than 8,000 split shells have been employed in various roadways and chambers, such as hau- lageway, intermediate haulageway, hoist house, return airways, shaft bottom etc. in four mines in Baisha mine area. The shell is made by rolling carbon-steel plate up. When used, the shell is pushed by a rock drill into a borehole smaller than the shell. When it expands, it presses against the wall of the borehole with a radial force and produces a friction force, or the anchorage force, along the entire length. The plate is then put on the end and form a restraint to the rockmass. When the openings are reinforced by the shells they tend to be stable. The practical experience shows that the anchorage force is related to the dia- meter difference between the borohole and the shell, the length of the bolt, rock properties, installation time, and material. That is, the greater the diameter difference, the longer the shell, the harder the rock, the longer the ins- tallation time, and the better the elastic pro- perties of the material, the greater the ancho- rage force, and vice versa.
