Geometric modeling is one of the most basic and important work during developing virtual reality system. In this paper, 3ds model file format is analyzed and adopted as a primary representation of the geometric model in virtual environment. The feasibility and generality are investigated from the point of view of principle, practical application and experiment result. It is proved that, for application not very complex, it is a practical way to adopting 3ds model and relative 3-d modeling software to establish the virtual reality system.
