A Brief Discussion of the Changes of Names for the Sake of Avoidence

因避忌而更改姓氏的原因有避讳、避祸、避免不良联想三类,更改后的姓氏有的与原姓氏有着形、音、义方面的联系,有的与该姓氏先人的名号、封地等有联系,反映了人们不忘己所出的心态。极小范围内存在着与禁忌语有关的临时改姓现象。

Causes for changing names for the sake of avoidance can be classified into three kinds: to avoid using personal names of emperors or elders, to keep away from disasters and to avoid unacceptable associations. The revised name may either have something to do with the graphic form, the pronunciation and the meanings of the original names, or have some relation with the names and the manors of the forefathers. This reflects that people have deep remembrance of their ancestors.
