The Western Missionaries and Chinese Christian: An Investigation of Internal Arguments in Methodist Mission Society of Fukien during the Late Qing Period

本文以美国德鲁大学 (DrewUniversity)馆藏资料为主要基础 ,描述清末福建美以美会教会两次内部争论 ,力图从新角度探讨清末基督教史。文章认为 :西方传教士并不是清末中国基督教的唯一代表。中国基督徒、西方传教士 ,同样是清末传教运动不可或缺的要素。在清末福建美以美会 ,传教士的内部矛盾与华人基督徒的影响密切相关。

Mainly based on the archives of Drew University Library in the United States, this article describes the two internal arguments in Methodist Mission Society of Fukien during late Qing period, with an aim to discussing the history of Chinese Church in a new perspective. The author holds that western missionaries could not be regarded as the only representatives of Chinese Church in the times. Both the western missionaries and Chinese Christians were primary elements of modern Christian history. In the Methodist Mission Society of Fukien, the internal contradiction among the western missionaries was in close connection with the influence from the Chinese Christians. Actually, Interaction between them made up the impetus for the progress of Chinese church.
