江汉平原自古即有水路交通之便,宋代本区在继承前代基础上,进一步发展了水路和陆路交通,交通重心也由过去南北向的荆襄一线向东西向的江陵、鄂州一线转移。陆路主要依托官修的驿道,水路则以长江干流为主,加上汉水、夏水、环水等支流,构成一张通达的交通网。水陆交通的发展有力地促进了经济开发水平的提高。来自北方中原和东面江西、西面四川的农民、商人等,借助便捷的水陆交通进入本区,成为江汉平原经济开发的活力。水陆交通所并举,带动了本区渔业、造船业的发展,促进了江陵和鄂州的兴盛,并进而带来平原区内经济开发的普遍扩展。

In Song dynasty, the transport of water and land of Jianghan plain was further developed on the former foundation. The transport center was also transferred from the north\|south Jing\|Xiang to the west\|east Jiangling and Ezhou. The land transport primarily relied on posthouses built by government. And the waterways depended on the Yangtze River, plus the Han, Xia and Huan Rivers etc. Many towns, markets and villages were connected by land routes and waterways. A transport net was built on the plain. The development of the land\|and\|water transportation promoted the level of region economy. Thanks to the advantage of transport, many farmers, businessmen and others around came into Jianghan plain. They made a great contribution to the development of this area. The extensive use of land\|and\|water transportation aroused the shipbuilding flourish, and the great business towns of Jiangling and Ezhou prosperous in the area. They promoted the region economy to expand widely. 
