Chen Yinke wrote an important paper entitled 'Discussing Han Yu' in 1954. It is an epoch-making study of the history of the Middle Ages in China. In this article the writer analyses the important significance of Chen Yinke' s 'Discussing Hanyu'. The article points out that Chen Yinke expounds the theme of the Ancient Prose Campaign and its significance to the research into the history of Tang Dynasty, and that he emphasizes the need to absorb foreign learning on the one hand, and the necessity not to forget the authentic national status on the other hand.
