An Imagined Community-On the Americans' Construction of the Vietnamese Image in The Green Berets

反映越战的早期小说《绿色贝雷帽》,以殖民者的眼光描写越南人,其中不乏对越南人的偏见和误解。美国人的话语优先权使越南人在越南本土进行的战争中成为一个沉默和缺席的主体。作者则以他的书写权影响读者把遥远的越南构筑成为一个与现实相异的国家,这个想象出来的社群也在一段时期内误导了美国国内民众对越战的态度。

The Green Berets, one of the earliest novels on the Vietnam War, depicts the Vietnamese from a colonists perspective. The novel is consequently full of prejudices towards and misunderstanding of the Vietnamese. Americans' priority in discourse reduces the Vietnamese to a silent and obscure group in a war on Vietnams land. The author with his power of writing influenced readers in constructing Vietnam into a country different from reality. This imagined community misguided the Americans for some time in history.
