Many male characters in Chinese Jingju and local operas traditionally have their faces painted according to different colour designs.This article makes a comprehensive study of these pecular designs under the following headings. 1.How the facial designs developed from old masks; 2.Components of the facial desgns—lines,colours and patterns; 3.Characteristics of the facial designs—balance and symmetry? 4.The symbolic meanings of colours; 5.Colours plus lines—by which the artists pass moral judgments; 6.The enlarged make-up face—an artistic illusion.
