ZHANG XUECHENG’S THEORY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FORM AND CONTENT OF WRITINGS

'经世致用'是章学诚文质观的特色。其基本方面是强调文章的社会作用,重视著述内容上的独创性,反对形式主义的文风,同时又不忽视文章本身的审美作用。这种全面而辩证的文质观,在考据成风的乾嘉时代显得十分突出和可贵。

This article gives a complete analysis and evaluation to Zhang Xuecheng's theory on the relationship between the form and content of writings.It points out that Zhang's theory is characterized by the view of 'applying knowledge to the nation's service',laying emphasis on the social influence of writings.Zhang's theory attaches importance to the originality in contents,disapproves of mere formalism,and at the same time does not neglect the appreciation of beautiful forms. This thorough and dialectical view on the relationship between writing form and content,coming out in the Qianlong and Jiaqing times(1736—1820),a time when textual research was all the fashion,is outstanding and commendable.
