W. S. Maugham is a diligent modern writer with many readers. His disability, poverty and rich experience of life are reflected in his novels and short stories. He is an onlooker watching the world timidly and pessimistically. He does not shun vulgarity, sympathizes with the unfortunate, tolerates persons with bad conducts, and knows clearly human absurdity. He often describes real people and real events in his novels, including himself and his experiences. His artistic style is anti-irony, easy, unforced and totally relaxed.
