英语语调研究的历史（英文）

The History of English Intonation Research

本文回顾了从18世纪到21世纪的英语语调研究历史,将英语语调研究分为五个主要阶段:(1)意识到言语中'音乐成分'的觉醒阶段;(2)韵律结构的发现阶段;(3)仅凭'口耳'建构语调音系的尝试阶段;(4)利用实验等实证方法考察语调语音表现的认识阶段;(5)全面认知语调和韵律的建模阶段。本文对每个阶段的代表性学者、观点、成果、目标、长处及短处进行了总结,在此基础上,还对目前的语调研究及其未来发展方向做了简要探讨。

This article provides a general overview of the history of English intonation research by tracing the research through five different stages of progress: 1) an awakening awareness to the"musical element" of speech; 2) the discovery of prosodic structures;3) impressionistic attempts toward a phonology of intonation; 4) better empirical understanding of the phonetics of intonation through instrumental experimentation; and 5) the development of models to provide a more comprehensive picture of intonation. Representative scholars, approaches, and findings are summarized for each period, along with discussions on some of the goals, accomplishments, strengths,and weaknesses of each period. This article will conclude with a brief discussion on the current and future direction of intonation research.
