钟敬文在其长达七十多年的学术生涯中对民间传说研究保持了极大的热情,并且取得了丰硕的成果。这些研究不仅在当时产生了重大的影响,对当下的传说学研究依然有其重要的借鉴意义。钟先生对传说学研究的贡献不仅仅在于他对某些具体民间传说的真知灼见,更在于其对传说研究方法的探索。他较早把分类研究和比较研究的方法运用到传说学领域,这在当时是极具开创性的,这两种研究方法至今仍是人们进行民间传说研究的主要方法。

Zhong Jing-wen concentrated on the folk legend study with great enthusiasm and made great achievements in the field during his more than 70 years of academic life.. These studies had brought great influence at that time, and then still have references to the study on legend now. Mr.Zhong had made enormous contribution for the study on legend. He not only has some unique views on some legends, but also does some pioneering work on the methodology of legend study. He applied the classification and comparison methods to the folklore study very early. Nowadays these two methods are the main methods for our folklore study.
