The working principles of IGBT switch type self - shunt excitation system have been analyzed. Some practical problems raised from excitation system of small size unit of electricity plant innovation and it' s settlement project has been put forward. The merits of this kind of excitation method have been demonstrated through checking it against the controllable silicon excitation system.
