In this essay Coady proposes to consider the philosophical background to understand fully the impact of John Rawls' s work. Philosophical thinking about justice dates back to the ancient Greeks, yet in the first seventy years of the 20th century political philosophy and political theory languished and the topic of justice was almost totally neglected. Coady attempts to present the philosophical explanation of the intellectual roots in the cultural development. He argues that it is Rawls who revived the social contract tradition and gave it a distinctive Kantian twist that provided a support for a humane version of liberal democracy.
