A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Euphemism in English and Chinese

就委婉语的使用、社会功能及其文化内涵等方面进行跨文化对比 ,指出委婉语是人类语言的普遍现象 ,就英汉委婉语而言 ,有雅化禁忌、礼貌、淡化和夸张等方面的相似性。同时 ,由于两种语言反映的民族特性、文化传统、宗教礼仪、道德和价值观念等方面的差异 ,故其又呈现出民族的特殊性。

This paper makes a cross-cultural comparison of euphemism in terms of its use, social function and cultural connotation in English and Chinese. Furthermore, it tries to show the similarity on taboo and the similarity of making language more elegant, polite, faint, exaggerated and etc.. It also indicates the cultural difference of English and Chinese on euphemism.
