摘要
A group of CAS scientists found in 2002 Paleolithic artifacts made800,000-500,000 years ago in Jinjiang City, Fujian Province. Scientists believe the findings outdatethe known prehistorical records in the province by hundreds of thousands of years. In May 2002,Yuan Baoyin, a geologist from the CAS Institute of Geology & Geophysics, and his colleagues broughtto light some stone lumps with discernible flaking traces from seaside facies of sands,blown-reddish clay and reticulated red soil on a high marine-built terrace near Jinyu Village of theShenfu Bay, Jinjiang City in Fujian. Then the collection is sent to Huang Weiwen, an archaeologistfrom the CAS Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. Huang con-firmed a quartzcore with several flaking scars on the surface and thought it was an indubitable artifact. The siteof the discovery was then once again explored by Yuan, Huang, and Shi Jiansheng, a local geologist.Their investigative expedition led to more discoveries, including six localities yielding stoneartifacts and more than 36 specimens for further research. A dozen of Paleolithic archaeologists inBeijing examined 13 pieces and determined them as Paleolithic artifacts.
