In September 2000, a brick tomb of the Western Jin was brought to light at Jiancaoping in Taiyuan. The tomb consists of the passage, tunnel, courtyard, chamber and so on. The chamber is flanked by a false side chamber on each side, suggesting a transition from the multi-chambered pattern of the Han dynasty toward the single-chambered one of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. About ten gray pottery utensils for everyday use such as jar, bowl, vase and so on were unearthed. No ceremonial objects or figurines are found. Special mention should be made of a jar covered with brown glaze, whose shape are extremely similar to those unearthed from the Western Jin tombs at Luoyang, Nanyang, Nanjing and other localities in Zhejiang and Hubei. Judging by all this, the tomb belongs to the Western Jin, and therefore is the first tomb of that period ever found in Shanxi.
