On the Origins of the Initials of "fei"(非) group, "zhang"(章) group and"ri"(日), "yu"(喻), "xie"(邪) in Middle Chinese

中古三等专有声母,非组由帮组受三等i介音的变体u的影响而来,章组由各种声母受复声母后垫成分j颚化而来,日母由鼻音声母受j颚化而来,邪母开口来自lj,合口来自SGW,喻三来自GW。

This paper discusses the origins of the initials of 'fei'(非) group, 'zhang'(章) group and 'ri'(日), 'yu(喻), 'xie'(邪) in middle Chinese. The conclusion is that the initials of 'fei'(非) group derive from 'bang'(帮) group while there was a 3rd Division medial i, and the initials of 'zhang'(章) group derive from different initials while the palatalizations of the cushiony component j of consonant cluster initials occurred, the 'ri'(日) initial derive from nasal initial while the palatalization occurred, 'xie'(邪) initial comes from lj and SGW, and 'yu'(喻三) comes from GW.
