翻译要传达三种信息:主题信息,艺术信息和文化信息.霍克斯所译<红楼梦>传达主题信息和艺术信息比较完美,但对文化信息的传递却存在问题,即对原语文化的替代、改变及省略等.这种归化的策略体现着文化间权力关系的不平等,而翻译的结果影响了对中国文化的正确理解和表达.应从促进文化发展和文化交流的角度正确解决文化的矛盾与冲突.

Three kinds of messages should be conveyed in translation: thematic message, artistic message and cultural message. The Story of the Stone (Hong Lou Meng) as translated by David Hawks satisfactorily conveyed the thematic and artistic messages of the original but problems do exist in the transmission of cultural message, which is reflected in cultural substitution, transformation and omission. This domestication embodies an unequal power relation, hampering the correct understanding and conveying of the Chinese culture. The contradiction and conflict should be properly handled from the perspective of cultural development and cultural exchange.
