The Chinese group of an international consortium to create the nextgeneration map of the human genome held its first meeting March 28 - 29 in Beijing, marking thelaunch of the new venture in this country. With the domestic support from CAS, NSFC and MOST, theChinese group will complete 10 percent of the entire task. With the objective to speed the discoveryof genes related to common illnesses such as asthma, cancer, diabetes and heart diseases, a 100million dollars international research project to develop a haplotype map, or RapMap, of the humangenome was officially started in October 28-29, 2002, when representatives from China, the US,Britain, Japan and Canada gathered in Washington D.C. for its 1st strategic meeting.
