摘要
The CAS has an unmatched collection of biological specimens in China, with upto 16 million items in its 24 biological specimen centers (including those under the dualadministration of the CAS and local governments), accounting for 85 percent of the national total,according to an article by Tong Fengqin and Song Suyin in the first issue of Science News in 2003.In the context of knowledge innovation program (KIP) piloted by the CAS, the development of thesecenters is gaining momentum. Some of the centers boast the largest collections in Asia and aresignificant even by world standards, such as those under the CAS Institute of Botany, the Instituteof Zoology, the Institute of Microbiology, the Institute of Oceanology, and the Institute ofHydrobiology. In sites around the country, these centers offer services for scientific research,popular science, teaching and economic development.
