Which Is More Important, Meaning-Expressing or Spirit-Transmitting? A brief discussion in translating old Chinese addressing-terms into English

从跨文化交际学和语用学两个角度 ,结合称呼语英译汉的实例 ,探讨称呼语翻译中达意和传神的相互关系。翻译时首先应忠实原文 ,力求达意。在达意的基础上争取传神 。

Because of the influence of the related sciences such as linguistics and intercultural communication on translation, the theory of translation has come to be studied and practised in a way of cross-science. In my essay, with examples of translating old Chinese addressing-terms into English, I will discuss the relationship between meaning-expressing and spirit-transmitting from the angles of pragmatics and intercultural communication. In translation, I think, we should be loyal to the original, trying to express the original spirit on the basis of reaching the original meaning first, so that we can acquire as much the translation equivalence between the original and the translated as possible.
