Both He and Zhonghe were important aesthetic concepts in ancient China. He, which appeared in 8th century B.C., was the aesthetic feelings acquired through sense of hearing, sense of sight and sense of taste. And Zhonghe, which appeared in 5th century B.C., were norms of emotions imposed to people by Confucianism. He, which was similar to the western concept that beauty lies in the harmony, was basic principle of aesthetics. Zhonghe, based on the principle that reason comes first and emotion second, was criticized and resisted by the Confucian rebels.
