Being Devoted to Academic Research without an Interest in Being Governmental Offi cials: An Understanding on Zhao Yuanren by Reading Yang Buwei's Miscellanies of Zhao's Family

通过解读杨步伟的《杂记赵家》和《一个女人的自传》两书并引证其他资料,评述了赵元任这位文理兼通、多才多艺的语言大师的学术生涯及其在世界学术领域的成就和地位,并昭示其一心治学不爱官的清高人品,以及热爱故土故国、维护民族尊严的各种事例。

Among researchers in modern China, the couple of Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei are devoted to each other till their old age, which is a model worth learning. Through a close reading of Miscellanies of Zhao's Family and An Autobiography of a Woman written by Yang Buwei, this paper comments on Zhao's, the talented master of language, academic life and his position and achievement in the world's academic fi elds, revealing a person who not only devotes all his heart into academic studies paying no attention to being a govenmental offi cial, but also cherishes his country and maintains national dignity.
