The western culture celebrates substance and believes in ontology. It considers the system of heaven-earth-man to be substantial. The Chinese culture celebrates spirit and believes in spiritual function. It places the system of heaven-earth-man within the harmony of the heaven creates, the earth nourishes, and man makes. The three functions produce a lively spiritualized world of nature-man unity. Without this tripartite functional space, the whole Chinese culture would collapse and fall into pieces. The introduction of the western culture into China since the 20 th century has been threatening the solid basis of the Chinese culture.
