This essay emphasizes on a fundamental issue that has not aroused the attention of jurists so far: the character of law. The character of law is a benchmark of legitimacy and legality in the construction of legal system and an important legal value which is complementary with justice, fairness and due procedure of law. This essay expounds the basic meaning of the character of law and its theoretical and practical importance through the illustration of Dworkin’s legal view.
