Origin of the Concept of Popular Novel in Ancient China:Novel Concept of Talking in the Song Dynasty

中国古代通俗小说观念随着通俗小说的发展而成熟 ,其成熟又促进了通俗小说的全面繁荣。宋代说话四家之一的小说在内容形式上有统一的特点和鲜明的文体特色 ,这标志着通俗小说观念的成熟。宋代说话四家之小说观念比同时代的正史子部小说观念成熟、纯粹 ,尽管宋代说话四家之小说观念与现代的小说观念还不完全相同 ,但是 ,它的出现使小说的含义从正史里包罗万象的兼有叙论式的残丛小语过渡到叙述虚构的完整事件 。

In ancient China, the concept of popular novel matured with the development of the novels and its maturity promoted all-round prosperity of popular novels. Novelists, one of the four schools of Talking in the Song Dynasty, had their unified chanacteristics and distinct stylistic features, which marked the matunity of the concept of popular novel. Compared with its concurrent in Volume Zi of official histony books, the novel concept of the four schools of Talking in the Song Dynasty was maturer and purer, though it was not the same as that in modern times. But its apperance transferred the meaning of novel from what was all-inclusive including narrative fragmentary expressions as defined in official history books to what narrated a complete fictious event. The emancipation and maturity of the concept of popular novel enabled the development of popular novels to make tremendous strides.
