In Asia and Europe, many paperboards are made from the multi-ply paperboard machine. Multi-ply board formation permits different types of fibers to be used in each individual ply, which has clear advantages over one ply paperboard in the flexibility of fiber choice. In the multi-ply paperboard production, the top ply is typically made of bleached chemical pulps. In the middle or back ply, however, less expensive fibers such as GW, TMP, HYP(BCTMP)and recycled fibers or mixtures of different fibers are used. Among them, maple HYP stands out due to its superior bulk. The use of maple HYP and its benefits in paperboard production are discussed.
