Detailed study on the northern shelf of South China Sea reveals that a half-graben is the fundamental unit of rift basins.The formation of it can be explained by Domino theory as well as a listric model.Half-grabens are linked together in different manners.The complex connection and superposition of a number of them in space and time produce rift basins of varied sizes and architectures.Half-graben analysis is a useful tool in many aspects of petroleum exploration.
