In this article, we explore the achievements of Yan Shi-gu (颜师古) on achient phonology. He had a relatively clear undestanding of the evolution of phology. He knew that the ancient rhymes can be classified and knew the relationship between different rhythmic entries. He also made great efforts to explore the ancient pronunciation and common pronunciation with scientific methods. His theory and practice on ancient phonology has greatly promoted the beginning and development of Chinese ancient phonology.
