In the 20th century, modernism was a general indication of a series of literary trends and schools while realism was a literary trend which demands the same aesthetic standards and art principles. Both modernism and realism were marvelous spectacles with great vitality and neither can be neglected. Modernism and realism had been presented in three typical developments while they both had been under the influence of social changes. We may get the revelation from the history, culture and aesthetics. Looking for-ward to the new century, we can predict that both modernism and realism will be like twin sisters and con-tinue to be so in the Western literary.
