将林纾的文学活动置之于中国古代文学向现代文学转型的背景下来进行考察,可以看出,林纾其实是位充满矛盾与惶惑的作家。在晚清的文学改良运动中,他是积极的改良主义者。当更为激进的新文化运动出现时,他又充满恋旧情结,最终站到了运动的对立面。他的这种矛盾与惶惑,代表着社会巨变和文学转型时期这一类文人的特点。

To inspect Linshu's literature activities under the background of the transformation from the Chinese classical literature to the modern literature, we can find that, in fact, Linshu is a writer full of contradiction and apprehension.
