方成培作为一位徽籍的古代文人,将当时流传民间的《雷峰塔》传奇梨园演出本,删改重编成一出完美尽善的爱情悲剧。此本在乾隆三十六年(1771)刻版刊行。由于方本《雷峰塔》传奇反映了人民的愿望,表达了最广大观众的审美趋向,几百年里广为流传,成为舞台演出本中的经典,也是源源不断的改编的模本。20世纪中期,方本《雷峰塔》传奇树立了在世界戏剧史中的地位,成为中国古典十大悲剧之一。

FANG Cheng-pei who was born in Anhui Province in 1713 revised the stage version of The Leifeng Pagoda, which was very popular among his contemporaries, into a moving love tragedy which was published in 1771 (36 years of Qianlong). Because FANG Cheng-pei's adaptation represents the wishes of the common people and the aesthetic conceptions of the audience, his revised edition has been popular ever since then. It has been a classic version of stage and a necessary model for other adapters, thus, the legend has found its position in the world plays, and become one of the most famous classic ancient tragedies.
